Racism in the Seattle School District

I believe that Seattle is a pretty diverse city. We're lucky to have such a great mix of cultures within our population. Unfortunately, racism still exists, not only here in Seattle, but in our country, and around the world. What concerns me is the fact that racism exists in our schools.

The Seattle School District consists of many schools with classes from Kindergarten to 12th grade, with schools in various locations within the city. Some locations make it inevitable for more minorities, some less, but regardless, there's racism of some sort in each school.

It's been a long time since I've been in high school, but from what I hear from those who are, racism is still around, and hidden within racial jokes, and social group segregation. I imagine that completely racist remarks are rare, and racism takes form in different ways these days, but I could be wrong. What do you think?

I'm glad that you used the word "culture".

I talked alot about it on my post entitled "internalized rascism in U.S. Teens"

In the West part of Shoreline, at Shorewood, I see little if any racial segregation, and if any, its the minority groups that are Limiting themselves by not letting people unlike them in. I know for a fact that most, if not all, groups at school are accepting of anyone. I havent seen anyone specifically kicked away from a group for being of a different race. Possibly I just havent observed enough, but i dont see this as such a problem.

I find less raceist remarks at my school, and more references to other minority groups. Specifically the usage of the word "gay" to describe something "bad" or "evil". I think we need to apply the same concepts used to lessen racism and apply them to other acts of hate be they based on race, gender, or whatever else.

Growing up in the Seattle School District i have obseved racism in schools and been subjected to it but it is more based upon sterotypes and also more of a mental opression rather than an abrupt physical form of racism. but no the less it is still a problem and the schools are some hat diverse but i go to garfield and Garfield highschool is known to be diverse but yet there aare only 1500 sstudents and ruffly about 1000 students are white will the other portone is deived amoungst other races. by saying this the schools are diverse but only to an extent. but at least there is more diverstiy that some other schools around washington.

I have experminted racism back in elemntry school but it has never effected me as a person. so i belive that it all depends on how people take things and how it effects different people, because some people take jokes pretty seariously and then other just laugh about it and move on
