Morocco Week One

July 10, 2008 - 4:18am by molly@oneworldn...

Our first week in Morocco has flown by!  Everyday students have a private Arabic class taught from 9:30am-12:30pm where they learn primarily Classical Arabic and some  Moroccan Arabic to better interact with their host culture.  They then go home to their host families for lunch and have a nap.  Most of the stores close and activities stop from about 1pm to 4pm due to the heat here in Morocco.  In the afternoons we go sightseeing or have cross cultural discussions to process and offer insight into the cultural differences they are experiencing.  So far we have visited Chellah (Roman ruins from the 2nd century), the royal Mausoleum (where the previous kings from the royal family rest) and a pottery village called Oualja.  Our cross cultural discussions include topics such as gender roles, Islam in Morocco, Polychronic versus Monochronic time, direct versus indirect communication.  July 13th-19th we will be on the excursion so email access will be limited and maybe even non-existent but we will be in touch upon our return.

Everyone seems to be doing well, experiencing lots of new things, loving the food and learning tons!
