Issues in the Community
I live in Rainier Valley also known as the South End and one issue I have seen in my community has been the littering going on. There is a large amount of trash that is just thrown all over the place in my area tarnishing the great places of Columbia City and the valley itself. Some playfields look dirty as well as areas around community centers and up near Rainier Vista. This problem can be solved through educating people and urging them to do what they know is right. My question to you is what is an issue in your community that YOU care about? If you have one what do you think you can do about it to make it better? Is there any way us at PSO can help? In my community in West Seattle (High Point) there's a lack of healthy food options, especially for those who live on a lower income. There are mostly mini marts and gas stations around my neighborhood and pretty much they just sell junk food. Fresh fruits and vegetables can be pricey and are often several blocks or miles away in more uppity areas of West Seattle. To solve this problem, a group has been created called F.E.E.S.T. which educates the community about healthy living and healthy food choices. Every week teens get together and cook a healthy dinner and while they eat they talk about issues going on in their community- from food to drugs to school...anything. Last month I attended the monthly potluck and there were about 30 teens and 3 or so adults. It was really powerful, we had an open mic, played games to get to know each other, and we had a thanksgiving potluck with plenty of healthy options. This is one way our community decided to tackle this problem. Earlier we had some news coverage about the group (we surveyed several grocery stores all around west seattle to compare prices and see which foods they had and did not have). We realized that we needed publicity, but also wanted to keep the meetings organic, because better than anyone, we know our community and what we need. The best thing about the group I think is that it is youth led. When youth take leadership it shows that we take the future seriously. Anyway, this is one way that we tackled the problem of a lack of healthy food. As it turns out, health is directly related to social justice, race, and class. Everything is connected!
