Never Stop Dreaming

October 23, 2008 - 8:53pm by Kai Flores

If someone tells you that you can’t do this or do that just because you’re thin or fat, tall or short or boy or girl, would you let them bother you and stop you from doing or trying a thing that you’ve always wanted? Of course not. You know your own limitations and you know what you can do. People are there to boost you up or tear you down and you can’t avoid that but still, you’re the only one who could decide for yourself. Let’s say you want to be a police but someone tells you “You can’t do that. That’s too big for you.”

There’s only two things you can do, either you let them bother you and stop you from doing it, or stand up tall and stick to what you want and say “Oh, pshh! Everyone knows I can do everything!”. If you let them bother you, then you also gave them the opportunity to take away the chance of yours being a hero, but if you take the risk and be a police, then you can save lives and save the day. Be the hero, and not just a hero, a SUPER hero. Saving lives is not easy. You won’t lose anything if you try as long as you know you can do it and as long as you believe in yourself. Who knows, one day you might be a famous singer or a well respected artist. That’s a lot better than standing there, wondering, regretting, and saying to yourself, “Why didn’t I do that. I should’ve even tried.”

My martial arts coach told me that when you focus on doing things to reach your goal, you can achieve, not just your goal, but anything. Anything and everything. Remember, even the simplest person can dream the greatest thing in the world. And when you dream, dream the BIGGEST dream you can. There’s nothing wrong with that. Never stop dreaming.

This is inspiring! I agree that having big dreams is important. However, I also believe that often times not enough stress is put on having a plan to achieve your dreams. Sometimes people's dreams can seem unrealistic because other's don't believe they can be reached. They think it's "absurd" or "impossible." Other times, dreams CAN be unachievable if nothing is done to move forward or achieve them. I think that setting goals and planning ahead is one of the best ways to make your dreams become a reality. There will always be forces trying to pull you down or hold you back, but if you are serious about your dream, then you will keep pushing forward, set goals for yourself, and put in the effort necessary to make your dream a reality.

I disagree with your argument. I do however, support your idea of independent goals and reaching them through malleable effort, but in a much more complex and realistic way.

You have to understand that each person has limitations, aptitudes for certain intelligences, and methods in which their brain processes information. Most individuals are unaware of their limitations just as equally as their peers whom categorize them. Many people are often more keen on your abilities than you are to seeing them first hand due to variation in perspective. I agree with you that condemning an individual from their goals is trivial and immature.

Your goals should be based upon your limitations and strengths. For example, I have no musical talent. Let's say my goal was to be a pianist despite my limitation. Do you think it is realistic to pursue a field in which is bound for failure? Quitters never win--but those that don't quit and never win are ignorant.

It's all about self discovery and reflecting on your own unique attributes in order to deem which goals are appropriate for you.

On the side note--one must not merely dream of success. Dreaming of success leads to disappointments and laziness. Dreaming and having goals are different concepts. Dreaming gets you no where.

Vehicle,

Using your example, if your dream was to be a pianist despite your lack of musical talent, it is without a doubt both realistic and necessary for you to pursue the field. You will always grow from an experience and I’d argue that it’s better to fail and grow as an individual then think what if.

It’s like what I tell my pee-wee football team. We may not win by points but if you give it your all and grow from it, then the game was a success

I understand that there is a lot you can learn from failure, but setting yourself up for failure doesn't give you insights and merely wastes valuable time.  If you're intereseted in something you clearly know you're not good at, then you should learn it on your own time and not pursue it as a career or any change that would sway your future.

Considering that pee-wee football is mainly for fun, I'm sure do you realize that not all your students are varsity material.  There is only so much you can grow from until you're just throwing your time away.

It’s all personal perception I guess and setting yourself up for failure is just a personal perception. If you go into thinking, “I’m going to fail and this is a waste of my time” then it will be. If you try something new and fail than I guarantee you’ve learned something. I’ve failed a lot in life and I’ve also gain valuable knowledge from those failures.

As for my Pee-Wee example, the kids might have joined for fun but the lessons they learn will stay with them forever. Every job interview I have ever had I mention that I played football for 9 plus years. It shows commitment, teamwork, work ethic, and a that you can accept then grow from failure (which is what we are talking about here)

I absolutely love your words... They are completely true, and I believe that is something that EVERYONE should know and go by, even though many do not. We can all be who we wish to be, and we shouldn't let anyone tell us otherwise.

It is nice to see someone so young with such perspective on life. With this attitude you will certainly achieve some of those dreams.

Its great that you listen to what other people tell you and really think about what they have said - decide if it has meaning for you or not.
