Energy for Everybody

October 17, 2008 - 5:45pm by dwyman
Lots of people talk about cleaner energy like its some kind of futuristic technology that we won't have for a long time and it won't give us what we need in terms of how much energy we want. The truth is that there is almost unlimited potential in clean energy, as apposed to oil and nuclear power, which both have decidedly limited potential.

Solar energy: Solar energy is there for us every day, all around us. It will continue to surround us for quite some time. If we are able to harvest 1/100th of 1% of 1 hour at high noon, we can power the whole world for a whole year.

The question then is not availability, but technology, and there are plenty of scientists who would be willing and able to accomplish a solar harvesting system that could power the earth forever. The problem is that they have to compete in a market that is already saturated with oil.

Wind energy: People say that wind energy isn't powerful enough. This just isn't true, the U.S. Department of energy admitted that if wind was completly harvested in 3 states, it could power the entire nation.

Tidal power: You can place a generator underwater and capture the currents, there are currently more then 40 sites noted as possible for tidal power in the UK. It is for caste that over 33% of the UK's power could come from tidal power.

Wave power: Wave power draws power from the waves, duh. It is estimated half of the world's energy could come from Wave power.

Another thing thats also important to point out that these energy sources require virtually no energy to set up. Unlike oil, gas, coal, hydrogen, and biomass.

All that aside, there is a type of energy that is better then any of them.

Geothermal: Geothermal is the energy source that holds the single most potential of any energy source that we have yet dreamed of. Most forms of energy are expressed in kilawat hours. Not geothermal. It is expressed in ZJ, or Zeta Juelz, or however they spell jewel, whatever. The point is 1/2 of a ZJ of power is enough to power the entire world for a whole year. A recent MIT study estimated that the total capacity of the earth is 13,000 ZJ of Geothermal power with 2,000 ZJ easily tap able. Do you understand that, that means that if we utilize this source which is possible to easily do RIGHT NOW. That means that we could be set for 4,000 years, just on an easy portion of Geothermal. And when you realize that this energy re-generates by itself, we realize that it is limitless, we can use it forever.

These sources are not all of the clean sources available, and as time goes on, we can and will find more.

Cars: The technology necessary to make a battery that can power a car that can go over 100mph, for over 200 miles on one charge exists, but because there are patents on this technology, by oil companies who don't want to see it prevail for obvious reasons, the technology sadly stay un-utilized. There is no reason beyond business interest that every car shouldn't run on completly clean electricity.

Airplanes: Done, we don't need airplanes, we have something better at our fingertips. Maglev trains have been created, they are fast, clean, safe, and use only 2% of the energy used for plane travel. Currently maglev trains exist that can travel up to 361 mph. However, that version is outdated completly. An organization called ET3 has established a tube based maglev that can travel up to 4000mph, no that is not a typo 4000mph. It utilizes a frictionless tube that can travel underwater and on land. That means you could go from LA to New York in 45 minutes. From DC to Bejing in 2 hours, the possibilities are limitless.

This is the future of travel, between Geothermal, advanced battery technology and Maglev trains, there is no reason to use fossil fuels ever again.

We can do this now! Why does anybody get excited about offshore drilling? Who cares? by that time we could be well on our way to clean energy forever. Oil executives know this, but all they care about is money, think about that the next time you're at the pump filling up.

I have a lot of respect for this post. The research, information and insight is incredible. There are so many alternatives to energy and fueling not only America's pricy lifestyle, but the worlds.

I wish more politicians would realize this.

I can't take credit for this insight, almost all of this information I learned from a free online documentary called zeitgeist addendum, the sequel to the movie simply titled zeit geist, both films I think most people need to take a look at.

Nice post. Drilling for more oil should not be our priority. There are endless possibilities for alternative energies. And not only that, but if were to focus our attention on oil and start building new offshore drilling platforms like McCain and Palin want so bad, they wouldn't even provide any oil to US markets for at least ten years! There is so much we could do in ten years with alternative energies.

Even if it does take 10 years, we will still need oil then, probably more so than we do now. Imagine if we had drilled offshore and in ANWR 10 years ago, we would be much better off today.

dwyman wrote on October 21, 2008 - 6:37pm:

That isn't true, prices are set on a global market, but beyond that, oil companies are reporting record profits, why aren't we looking into that rather then expanding their enterprises?

Mr.S wrote on October 21, 2008 - 6:44pm:

I'm confused, what isn't true? We would have less dependence on the middle east and Venezuela and prices would be lower because of more supply. This whole economic mess might not have occured if gas prices had stayed reasonable.

dwyman wrote on October 21, 2008 - 6:51pm:

I was refering to your ANWR statment. But I would like to pose a question to you: How do you explain the record oil profits in such a market?

On a side note, compared to some countrys (Like the UK) our oil prices are considered extremly low.

Mr.S wrote on October 21, 2008 - 8:31pm:

How do I explain record profits? Are you asking why oil companies are allowed to make so much or why they make so much? The only reason they made record profits was because the price of oil was skyrocketing. Now that it is going back to normal, I am sure their profits will be dissapointing for them.

As for gas prices in Europe, they have heavy taxes that artificially keep prices high. Plus, they do not have to drive as much as we do.

dwyman wrote on October 21, 2008 - 8:40pm:

Alright, so are you saying global economics are to blame for their high profits? My question was why should they be making record profits when their prices are so high.

Mr.S wrote on October 20, 2008 - 11:03am:

the "3% oil reserve and 30% oil usage" is a non sequitur. We do not use 10x the amount that we have in reserves, we merely use 30% of the oil that is being taken out of the ground. There are still unimaginably huge amounts of oil that has not been tapped.

We cannot stop drilling oil, we still need it, and drilling for oil does not mean that we will not be making advances in other technology.

dwyman wrote on October 20, 2008 - 7:55pm:

What I am saying is that we have 3% of the worlds oil on our soil, meaning that if we drilled for all the oil we possibly could, it wouldn't get rid of the oil crisis. We can't drill out of this problem.

Mr.S wrote on October 21, 2008 - 11:05am:

Everyone knows that at some point oil has to be phased out. We are not at that point yet, so we still need to drill. This is a bad analogy, but it would be like Microsoft developing and releasing games for the next Xbox console years before its available in stores.

Mr.S wrote on October 19, 2008 - 9:33pm:

All those ideas are great, and should all be aggressively researched. However, none of those will ever fuel our trucks, our trains, our cargo ships, etc. The battery operated car and this maglev thing (which is news to me but sounds great) are figments of our imagination at this point.

We need to keep drilling for oil because we are still going to be dependent on it for decades to come, if not for the entirety of the next century.

dwyman wrote on October 19, 2008 - 9:45pm:

The entirety of the next century? No that battery technology is real, and we are already making advances in MagLev technology.

Drill for oil? Even if we drill all the oil that's available, we will only have 3% of the world's oil, we use 30%. We can't just drill out of the problem. And batteries are working now, it is already decreasing our oil addiction, how can you say that it's a "figment of our imagination?" It's not, it's already happening.

You should check out the documentary "who killed the electirc car" its pretty revealing
